Dental Crowns

Pediatric dental crowns are necessary when a child's tooth is too severely damaged that a filling is no longer an option.

Pediatric Dental Crowns

A dental crown is an effective restoration that covers or “caps” a tooth to prevent cracking and to restore it to its natural size and shape. Our pediatric crowns offer much-needed assistance with chewing and speaking. We use high-quality materials to ensure the restorations last as long as possible and provide exceptional performance.

Why would my child need a dental crown?

It is always our goal to preserve as much of your child’s natural tooth structure as possible. However, when decay or an injury damages a tooth beyond what a filling can fix, we can protect what is left of the tooth with a dental crown. This restoration covers the top, visible portion of the tooth and allows your child to chew food efficiently. It also helps maintain the proper spacing for teeth so that your child’s smile can continue developing normally.

  • What is a kids dental crown?

Dental crowns are used when a tooth has a very large filling that exceeds the natural tooth structure.

Dental crowns have many applications. The first is to be installed over a damaged tooth to cap the existing structure, which restores the damaged tooth so it can be used normally.

  • What are dental crowns made of?

Overall, dental crowns can consist of several materials, including stainless steel and porcelain. To restore baby teeth, specifically primary molars, stainless steel is one of the most commonly chosen type of crown for its strength and function. For more prominent front teeth, we may opt to place a crown made of a combination of stainless steel and porcelain. If your child requires a crown on a permanent tooth, we will determine the type of crown needed based on its position in the mouth and the durability required for that tooth.

  • How long do pediatric dental crowns last?

Assuming your child’s crown is placed on a baby tooth, it should last until they lose the tooth naturally—typically around the age of 12 at the latest. For permanent teeth, dental crowns can last between 10 and 20 years, depending on how well your child maintains healthy oral habits.
