Fluoride Treatment

Ensure your child's teeth stay strong and healthy with professional fluoride treatments at Wilderness Station Pediatric Dentistry. Our expert care helps prevent cavities and promotes long-term dental health.

What Is Fluoride?

Fluoride treatment is a simple and quick procedure. The dentist will apply a concentrated fluoride solution, gel, or foam to your child’s teeth using a brush, swab, tray, or rinse. This process takes just a few minutes and effectively protects against tooth decay.

Children are more susceptible to cavities because they lack the dexterity adults have for brushing and flossing, making it harder to remove all the harmful bacteria that cause tooth decay. Regardless of your child’s age, fluoride treatment is highly effective when applied at each dental visit.

  • How is fluoride treatment applied?

Dr. Marty highly recommends fluoride treatment for all his patients. We are happy to provide fluoride treatments at every visit.

  • Is there any fluoride treatment aftercare my child should follow?

After a fluoride treatment, it’s important for your child to avoid eating or drinking for at least 30 minutes. This allows the fluoride to fully absorb into the teeth, maximizing its protective benefits.

In addition to regular fluoride treatments, you can help keep your child cavity-free by encouraging a consistent oral hygiene routine. Ensure they brush twice daily for two minutes, floss at least once a day, and rinse with an ADA-approved mouthwash. A balanced diet and limiting sugary and starchy foods are also beneficial for maintaining their dental health.

  • What does fluoride do / what are the benefits?

Fluoride is essential for maintaining strong and healthy teeth. Here are the key benefits of fluoride:

    • Strengthens Tooth Enamel: Fluoride helps to harden the outer layer of the teeth, making them more resistant to decay. This is especially important for children, whose teeth are still developing.
    • Remineralizes Teeth: Fluoride can repair early signs of tooth decay by promoting the remineralization process. It helps to rebuild weakened enamel before cavities can form.
    • Prevents Cavities: Regular exposure to fluoride can significantly reduce the risk of cavities. It creates a protective barrier on the teeth, which guards against the acids produced by bacteria in the mouth.
    • Reduces Sensitivity: By strengthening the enamel, fluoride can help reduce tooth sensitivity. This is particularly beneficial for children who experience discomfort from hot or cold foods and drinks.
    • Supports Overall Oral Health: Fluoride treatments contribute to a healthier mouth overall. They help maintain a clean environment in the mouth, reducing the presence of harmful bacteria that can cause gum disease and other oral health issues.
    • Cost-Effective Preventative Measure: Investing in fluoride treatments can save on future dental costs by preventing the need for more extensive treatments like fillings, crowns, or root canals.

Regular fluoride treatments, combined with good oral hygiene practices, are an effective way to ensure your child’s teeth stay healthy
