Space Maintainers

Space maintainers help hold the location for adult teeth if a primary tooth is lost early.

Space Maintainers

When a baby tooth falls out earlier than it should, it can create problems for the growth of adult teeth. Pediatric dentists use small devices called space maintainers to keep that spot open so permanent teeth can come in where they’re supposed to. Without one, an adult tooth may drift into the empty space, leading to crowding and alignment issues as more teeth erupt.

Early tooth loss can occur for various reasons, including injury, decay, congenital conditions, or accidents. Because every child’s situation is different, the dentist will recommend the type of space maintainer that best supports your child’s developing smile.

At Wilderness Station Pediatric Dentistry, we offer space maintainers to guide proper tooth development and help ensure that your child’s permanent teeth grow in healthy and aligned.

  • What are the different types of space maintainers?

There are two main types of space maintainers: fixed and removable. Fixed space maintainers are cemented to a tooth and stay in place until the dentist removes them. Removable space maintainers look similar to retainers and can be taken out for cleaning. Your child’s pediatric dentist will recommend the best option based on which tooth was lost and your child’s age and needs.

  • How long do space maintainers last?

Space maintainers usually stay in place until the permanent tooth begins to erupt, which can range from a few months to a couple of years. Your child’s dentist will monitor it during regular checkups and remove it when it’s no longer needed.

  • Are space maintainers painful?

Space maintainers are not typically painful. Your child may feel a little pressure or notice the appliance for the first few days, but most kids adjust quickly and don’t experience ongoing discomfort.
